Bedroom Epiphany

Several years ago while celebrating an anniversary at a Bed-and-Breakfast in Charleston, I had an epiphany. I suddenly understood what was so special about spending the night in places like that one. I was sitting in bed taking note of the details that made the room a peaceful place to rest. First of all, there was no clutter. In fact, as I thought back to all of the wonderful rooms that I had visited over the years, every room had that simple, uncluttered look. I also took note of the comfort of the bed and linens and realized that there was no reason why I shouldn't enjoy that peaceful experience at home. So, I went home and made some changes in my own room.

I simply started removing some stuff. I took the dresser that we used for our clothing and put it in the closet. I also took out a dressing table that I never used, since I applied make up and such in the bathroom.

I bought some simple, but very comfortable, sheets and a down comforter. I also added some down surround pillows. As you can see, it is not fancy at all, but boy is it nice to crawl into after a long day.

I also try to add a special touch once in a while. Can you tell what that is?

....fresh flowers in a vase. I can't think of any other item that could make me feel as if I am spending the night in a nice room more than a vase of flowers by the bed. I do try to keep from putting anything on the remaining dresser or bedside tables to distract from the peaceful setting that I have tried to create. Don't you think we all deserve to have a bedroom that makes every night special?

You're right! Are you ready to rent out the room?

I like it. I really like the little table in the last photo. How cute is that? I agree with you though about the bedroom. I don't do anything in my bedroom that will cause clutter to accumulate. I like it clean and simple. We stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge in Boyne, MI a couple years ago. I loved the bed! My hubby was so nice to surprise me with a comforter just like the one on the bed from their store. Every time I climb in bed I remember that wonderful bed. Now if I could only convince him that I really do need a jacuzzi in there!

Love, love your bedroom! It is so peaceful and warm! I want to declutter - especially photos that line every dresser and chest of drawers - but I can't bring myself to remove them! Maybe you will be my inspiration. The beautiful hydrangeas are the perfect finishing touch. Thanks for sharing!

Your room look very pretty and uncluttered. Mine is just he opposite. I have books everywhere. And I love to read and watch TV before falling asleep. I've tried to unclutter but it never seems to stick.

Every time I declutter the room it clutters itself again ... I think my husband feels happier with it that way. So I have lovely guest room with satisifes my desire to have a lovely simple bedroom to look upon and when guests come you can be sure fresh flowers are added.

Your room is lovely.

How pretty. I should rethink my room with those thoughts in mind, I know one day I'd like a chair at the bottom of my bed with a lovely cozy throw so I can sit and read some afternoons :) Thanks for the reminder.

I love the "pop" of the blue hydrangeas. The whole room does look peaceful and welcoming. I've also read that family photos should not be in a bedroom. I do have one frame that has sketches of my husband and two boys and can't bear to move it. I love the simplicity of the bed. We have a down comforter (LL Bean) that is truly a year-round weight. It is so light but just right.

Which B&B did you stay at in Charleston? We lived in Charleston before moving here. It's a wonderful city!

Have a great weekend.

Best,
Bonnie
