A Perfect Weekend

I love fall weekends! There is something about the way the chill in the early morning air melts into the warmth of the afternoon. There is also something special about the way that the sun's light illuminates the glorious colors that are found all around.

This past weekend our family traveled for the day to the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway once again for some sightseeing and a picnic. I can't think of any better way to celebrate a fall weekend than time spent together enjoying God's creation. I thought I would share just a few of the pictures that I took of our drive.

The trees are just beautiful when clothed with fall colors.

This is my husband's favorite part of the parkway.

Everyone loves a picnic!

Who could resist a little shopping?

We had to visit Ben Long's fresco painted on a little country church's wall.

Isn't the church absolutely beautiful?

We have been studying Michelangelo's art and fresco painting. When you home school, every trip becomes a field trip.

When your hobby is photography, everything becomes a photograph.

I love the cross against the blue sky.

Every trip to the mountains has to include some exploring.

Isn't it amazing how a little trickle of water...

...can turn into a beautiful waterfall?

Michelangelo could not have painted a picture as lovely as this.

Stopping in Hickory to have dinner with my nephew was a great ending to a perfect day.

Beautiful photos. When I was growing up we lived close enough to the Parkway to drive up for the day - even the afternoon. I have wonderful memories of those drives. We still visit the Parkway as often as we can, but it's now a long drive and involves an overnight stay.

Gorgeous photos!!! And I was thinking the same thing about the cross against the blue sky. Totally gorgeous!!!

I have been on the Blue Ridge Parkway only once...back in 1998. We easily fell in love with that area of the country (we were mostly in Maggie Valley, NC and over towards Gatlinburg, TN). We were there in July, though, so we didn't get to experience the beauty of fall...though it was stunning enough in summer.

Anyhow, thank you for sharing your lovely photos.

Blessings and hugs,

I so enjoyed your trip! The photos are wonderful and your commentary makes me feel like I was there! I love, love the church and the painting! You picked a perfect weekend trip to see fall up close; that would be my choice, too, if I lived close enough!

Stunning photos! I am hoping to get on the Parkway this weekend to see some fall color. Your daughters are pretty young ladies!

One of my favorite places, the Blue Ridge Parkway. And what a shot of the landscape! It looks as though you had a wonderful time with family.

Our trees are being pummeled by a week of rain, so much of our foliage is beginning to wane. Thank you for sharing yours.

Oh, I just love all your photographs! My gosh, you seem to be peaking in foliage at about the same time we are! It looks like you had a wonderful day! We may be in for lots more rain (and high winds) so that will probably put an end to lots of our foliage. If you really want the rain, I'll see if I can talk it into heading down your way! haha... Carla, these photos are beautiful! (I feel like a broken record; I think I always comment on your photos. But they're always so pretty!)

Looks like y'all had a wonderful day. I love your statement that every trip becomes a field trip. Really, isn't that the way it's supposed to be?

That picture of the white cross against the blue sky is absolutely stunning. Thank you for sharing these!

What a lovely day, Carla! You've presented this beautifully. My favorite picture is the one of the windows in the church ... so peaceful, and you can still see outside. Love the rail fences along the parkway, too.
